The Sky-Watcher EQ-AL 55i pier extension is a handy addition to my Sky-Watcher EQ-AL 55i mount, EQ-AL 55i tripod, and to my Sky-Watcher AZ5 tripod. The pier extension allows me to mix and match my EQ-AL 55i on either tripod. This means I need only one tripod if I'm planning to use AZ5 or EQ-AL 55i mount during an evening. That means transporting less equipment to your observing site. The other bonus is that the pier extension increases the height of the mount and that offers more comfortable observing for a taller fellow.
