Going birding or nature watching with kids is a blast. We think of it as a scavenger hunt that doesn’t require and work to set up. Nature just serves up a buffet of wonders.
There are two key features that we look for in this category.
The first is durability. No matter how careful we are, binoculars will get bumped or dropped, they’ll get fingerprints on optics, and a good binocular needs to be able to stand up to that. These are all rubber coated, and waterproof, they’ll hold up to regular use.
The second is lower magnification. Lower magnification means a wider field of view, and that means it’s easier to find and follow a target. If you’re zoomed in at 10x magnification, it can be hard to find a bird, and even harder to follow that bird if it’s moving. At 6x or 7x it’s much easier to find and follow a bird (or anything else).
Any of these binoculars will give great views and get kids a great start in the hobby.
