Product Description
Finding and Viewing Messier’s Objects is a folded 5-panel field guide to all 110 of Messier’s Deep Sky Objects (DSOs). DSOs are star clusters, nebulae, and galaxies (DSOs do not include single or double stars or objects in our solar system). Astronomer Charles Messier, a Frenchman, from Paris, complied this catalogue during the mid-1700s, and it was the very first of its kind. Because it was the first, his catalogued consists of the biggest and brightest DSOs that can be viewed from the northern hemisphere.
Everyone has heard about some of these objects. They include the Pleiades or Seven Sisters, the Andromeda Galaxy, Orion’s nebula, and the Beehive or Presepe cluster of stars.
This list of DSOs is special to amateur astronomers because it is often the first set of DSOs that are observed and all of Messier’s objects can be seen in telescopes as small as 3-inches in diameter. There are thousands of DSOs, but most are very faint and not easily visible using small telescopes.
This field guide includes Messier’s history, eight charts, a table, and other information like the Messier Marathon (It is possible to see all 110 objects in one night during a New Moon in March.). Some charts are detailed to indicate precise positions. The table lists the celestial coordinates, magnitude, and size of all 110 objects. This field guide is a complete and quick reference source to Messier’s objects.
Measurements/Construction. Folded, this 2-sided, 5-panel field guide measures 4 by 8.5 inches. Expanded, it is 8.5 by 19.25 inches. And, it is laminated for durability and to resist the elements.
