Product Description

The AM5N - New and Improved for 2024!

  • Load Enhancement: Maximum Load without a counterweight has increased all the way to 15kg (from the old 13kg)
  • Accuracy Improvement: Periodic Error has been worked to be within ± 10 arc seconds – half that of the old version
  • Low Temperature Tolerance: Ultra-Low temperature tolerance means you can operate as usual all the way down to -20°C (-4°F)
  • Cable Management: DC Output and Type-C USB Port have been integrated into the dovetail plate to effectively prevent cable snagging/twisting
  • New Bluetooth Function: a Bluetooth function can now be used to control the mount, which greatly improves the control experience.

Mount Body

The traditional equatorial mount requires heavy counterweights. It can be very difficult to keep balance in RA and DEC directions, also inconvenient for transit and storage, which bring the amateur astrophotographers a lot of pain when they are out for imaging.

Some of the strain wave geared drive mounts are relatively simple in functions, insufficient in load capacity, also not very stable in use.

The internal structure of the body optimized with the strain wave gear reducer and synchronous belt, bringing more accurate control and an amazing reduction ratio of 300:1.

Astronomy-Dedicated Strain Wave Gear

ZWO jointly developed the strain wave gearing system with well-known domestic manufacturers based on the actual needs of astrophotographers. It comes with very low periodic errors, smooth gearing and high torque. The guiding accuracy is 0.5-0.8 arc seconds, which makes the AM5N mount extremely suitable for astrophotography.

5.5kg Mount Weight, Large Load Capacity

While the portability is very important, the stability is also essential in use. We don't blindly pursue the lightweight of the mount body; we are more so along the lines of stability for entire use.

The capacity of this mount is 15kg without any counterweights attached, and increases to 20kg when using (up to) a 5kg counterweight.

Note: the counterweight should be secured on a counterweight bar of no more than 25cm in length.

Equatorial Mount / Altazimuth Mount

  • Equatorial Mount Mode: Suitable for tracking and photographing objects
  • Altazimuth Mount Mode: Suitable for observing objects
  • You can switch between these two methods with the app, or through the hand controller.

Unbelievable guiding, but doesn't like the cold very much

I'm incredibly happy with my new AM5. I was incredibly lucky to have clear skies on the morning it arrived. On that note, I was really impressed with how quickly it did arrive! I think it was at my door in about two days after payment was made.
It was really easy to set up, and get going. I mounted my C9.25 with the counterweight and was really impressed with my guiding numbers, which were about .8 - 1.0, and as low as .5 on my last night out with it. Its so much more quieter than my previous mount, and my entire rig is way more lighter and easier to lug around to dark skies.
The only downfall I've found is that its not a fan of the cold. It makes quite a noise and won't move in RA axis when moving at full speed. It only happens when going to the home position, or slewing to a target. This happened around -5 C. I've found if I just move it close to the target with the hand controller at a lower speed and everything is just fine.

Next level astrophotography unlocked!

So far I couldn't be happier with my new Zwo AM5. I finally got to defork my meade 8 inch SCT and use it to do astrophotography. Built like a tank and and extremely precise. I'm looking forward to using it at dark sky sites. It's very portable with the included case. Thank all-star telescope for the quick delivery. Clear skies.

Amazing performance from a small package.

Extremely well built. With a little tuning by following a guide on ZWO's forum, I was able to achieve between 0.3" to 0.7" guiding over multiple nights with an imaging rig weighing ~20lbs. The seeing conditions were very bad due to the smoke, so I can expect this to be the worst case scenario.

This mount is my favorite piece of astronomy gear I've purchased.
