Triple APOD - June 27, 2024: AR 3723 in Hydrogen Alpha by Richard Covey

The sunspot group designated AR 3723 is the remnants of AR 3664, the sunspot group responsible for the historic G5 geomagnetic storm and aurora show on May 10-11, after two more trips around the sun. The sun has a period of rotation of 24.7 days at the equator, yet a period of nearly 38 days at the poles.

Today's image shows the region in Hydrogen Alpha light, a wavelength of 656.28nm, a deep red colour to our eyes. This wavelength allows you to see otherwise invisible structures in the sun's chromosphere, including filaments, spicules, and prominences, all seen here.

 Equipment Used:

3.27 ms exposures

FireCapture for video acquisition, Autostakkert 4 for stacking, IMPPG, Pixinsight, Photoshop for processing.
